Los faros de los vehículos pierden el lustre y se ensucian por varios motivos: el polvo del ambiente, los humos y gases del motor, micro arañazos producidos por diminutas partículas que lo golpean durante la conducción y con el paso del tiempo, la propia degradación del material con el que están fabricados, por efecto directo del sol y la oxidación.

Sin embargo estos faros son recuperables a un nivel óptimo, efectuando sobre ellos un proceso de restauración adecuado. Primero se hace un lavado con desengrasante que limpia la superficie, después del aclarado se enmascara para proteger la carrocería y se realiza un lijado con lijas de diferente grano, posteriormente se pule con una cera para sacarle el brillo perdido que, además, repele el agua para evitar que se forme barrillo en la superficie.

Después de este proceso, algunos talleres, aplican un barniz sobre el faro que, aunque, en un primer momento le saca más brillo, al cabo del año o año y medio, este barniz se va deteriorando, resquebrajandose y haciendo que los faros pierdan, el lustre de la restauración, con el agravante de necesitar, en una próxima restauración, más tiempo de mano de obra para eliminarlo, con el consiguiente aumento de coste del servicio. Nosotros no somos partidarios de este último paso.
